How the 2008 civics test works
The civics test is part of the naturalization interview. A USCIS officer asks up to 10 questions from the official list of 100, and you answer out loud. You pass with 6 correct answers, and the officer stops asking as soon as you reach 6 correct or 5 incorrect.
Tests 1 to 10 together include all 100 official questions. Working through the numbered tests in order is the quickest way to see every official question at least once.
Answers about current officials, your governor, your senators and your representative change over time. Check them before your interview.
2008 practice tests: common questions
How many questions are on the 2008 civics test?
The officer asks up to 10 questions from a bank of 100 official questions, and you pass with 6 correct. Each practice test here uses 10 questions, like the real test.
When does the test stop?
As soon as the result is decided: the officer stops at 6 correct answers, because you have passed, or at 5 incorrect answers, because you cannot still reach 6. Exam mode here stops at the same points.
Should I take the 2008 test?
You take the 2008 test if USCIS received your Form N-400 before October 20, 2025. Your receipt notice shows the date USCIS received it.
Do these practice tests use the real questions?
Yes. Every question and answer is the official USCIS wording. The tests are fixed sets, so you can retake one and compare your score, and the questions that change with elections are marked while you practise.
Are the 2008 practice tests shorter than the 2025 ones?
Yes. The 2008 test asks up to 10 questions instead of 20, and you need 6 correct instead of 12. Tests 1 to 10 together cover all 100 questions, so finishing them once means you have seen the whole list.
I qualify for 65/20. Should I take these tests?
These tests draw from all 100 questions. With 65/20 you are asked only from the 20 starred questions, so study those on the 2008 question list first.
