How the 2025 civics test works
The civics test is part of the naturalization interview. A USCIS officer asks up to 20 questions from the official list of 128, and you answer out loud. You pass with 12 correct answers, and the officer stops asking as soon as you reach 12 correct or 9 incorrect.
Tests 1 to 7 together include all 128 official questions, and each question appears three or four times across the 25 tests. Working through the numbered tests in order is the quickest way to see every official question at least once.
Answers about current officials, your governor, your senators and your representative change over time. Check them before your interview.
2025 practice tests: common questions
How many questions are on the 2025 civics test?
The officer asks up to 20 questions from a bank of 128 official questions, and you pass with 12 correct. Each practice test here uses 20 questions, like the real test.
When does the test stop?
As soon as the result is decided: the officer stops at 12 correct answers, because you have passed, or at 9 incorrect answers, because you cannot still reach 12. Exam mode here stops at the same points.
Should I take the 2025 test?
You take the 2025 test if USCIS received your Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025. Your receipt notice shows the date USCIS received it.
Do these practice tests use the real questions?
Yes. Every question and answer is the official USCIS wording. The tests are fixed sets, so you can retake one and compare your score, and the questions that change with elections are marked while you practise.
Is the real civics test written or multiple choice?
Neither. A USCIS officer asks the questions out loud and you answer out loud, in English for most applicants. Practice tests on this site are a study tool, not the format of the real interview.
How many practice tests should I take?
Start with tests 1 to 7, which together cover all 128 questions, then keep going until you pass comfortably several times in a row. Study the questions you keep missing. Your scores are saved in this browser so you can see which tests you have finished.
